  • The Modern Natural Dyer by Kristine Vejar

I had the pleasure to visit A Verb for Keeping Warm in June this year, there I got to see the lovely shop and studio, the dye garden and the amazing rack of samples of Verb's sewing patterns to try on. Best of all I got to meet Kristine and her wonderful colleagues and had the honor of seeing the proof for The Modern Natural Dyer.  The inspiration and excitement I left with has stayed with me. Nearly immediately I pre-ordered the book for the shop and waited eagerly for it.
The Modern Natural Dyer was absolutely worth any wait. The book is so stunning, while being incredibly informative and accessible.
    Madder and Dyer's Coreopsis
    Indigo, Woad and Logwood
     Shade Card for protein-based fibers.
As a person new to dyeing I appreciate the clarity with which Kristine shows the differences in how to work with different natural fibers. I could pour over the two different shade cards for hours.
The projects in the book provide many ways to explore the skills you can learn within. I love the tying together of the knowledge, and its practical application.
Flowers at My Fingertips Sewing Kit
    Northwoods Hat
I especially loved seeing further creativity happening with this hat when Mary Jane Mucklestone, used her Northwoods Hat Dye Kit to make two colors and then did a colorwork section on her hat.
We are very happy to offer a giveaway on our instagram account @toltyarnandwool of a copy of the Modern Natural Dyer and a Northwoods Hat Dye Kit, pick your color red, yellow or purple. Please leave a comment with your chosen kit color on our instagram post about the book by noon PST on Saturday 11/14/15- @toltyarnandwool
We hope you enjoy The Modern Natural Dyer as much as we do and we look forward to seeing the projects you are inspired to make with it!

Started in 2007 by Kristine, A Verb for Keeping Warm has been home base for Kristine’s explorations into natural dyeing and is located in Oakland, California. It is the home of The Modern Natural Dyer - as this is where Kristine has conducted all of her research for this book.
The Modern Natural Dyer and the series of natural dyeing kits which accompany the book - are all available through the A Verb for Keeping Warm website or a selection of kits will soon be available in our brick and mortar store in Carnation, WA.
